New box for Nephew
The nephew is turning 8 soon so I thought a little box to store his collection of "gemstones" in would be good.
I'm brand new to the gig, so this box was a bit hard. Timber is an old pallet slat and the insides were from a piece of timber I pulled off the back of the garage wall while painting (no doubt this was even recycled at the time of fitting based on the house!)... both are unidentified but some interesting patterns.... (I am new)
Took just over a day to do/glue up, another day to sand (to 420) and a bit more to rub in 2 coats of Danish Oil. Its nice an smooth. Box lid "clicks" into place. 310*90*70.
Love the box making, its quite addictive!

Re: New box for Nephew
Very nice. Love the lid design and the unusual grain. Can i ask how you did your box miters? Glue only?

The grain was a very welcome surprise. I chopped open a slat off an old skid pallet I had out the side of the house. I have read more on epoxy for filling since then, but I do like the "openness" of it. Its added some nice texture.
The box ended up being given to my mother in law and I made a different box for the cuz, he is into the game minecraft and I designed a chest for him based on the chest in the game.
The ends are only mitres, glued with Titebond II. I have all 3 titebonds and the epoxy (bought Amazon) and did some tests. I am new at this, so doing something cool like fingers, doves or otherwise would have just ended in a ruined box. I glued up 4 mitres made from offcuts then tried to break them.
I am a very strong guy. I could not break the joint with the titebond II (well, I did but I ended up breaking the wood and tearing out great hunks of endgrain, not the joint in iteself) so I went with that.
I've subsequently read about keys, etc, and made a few jigs, so the next ones will get that treatment.... but it will in my mind be only cosmetic, for I believe I could subject that little box with its glued bottom to some terrific forces without damage.
I believe people have underestimated just how strong these glues are!

Nice job. I'm in the process of making my first ever box now. No idea what it's for yet, will see if the wife wants it when it's finished otherwise it'll be a gift for someone.

Really like the box, a good basic versatile design. The Danish brought up the grain and looks good. Nice work.
