Default First box since high school

Just a kwila merbau box wendy inspired me to copy her lid design after we chatted about the process at the show, so got energetic and made myself a router table today and began this as a test. its not finished. just posting it here to give wen her credit where its due, and maybe get some tips or pointers. Not bad for a few bits of decking offcut i rekon.

I only got a small bit of tearout on one side on the mitresaw was able to pva it back in, i cut the sides on the 45 vertically, i think i need a better process for it so i dont get the tearout.

I did the routing of all my slots on unlengthed timber first except for the box splitting to lid cut, before i mitre cut them, is it best to do it the other way round?

and of the 4 corners i have one long side thats about 1.5 - 2mm lower, i'm tryin to think about how to fix it not sure i can, afraid to glue it at present as its got ...nvm i just realised, got it i need to redo the base connection for that particular side again.

I broke 2 thin slim 1/4" (chinese boxed set) bits so far but i rekon its due to the poor table top unlevel and my inexperience, please tell me i'll not be forever buying bits and having breakages.

any comments most welcome and thanks for the idea wendy.

Neal (rushin back downstairs to redo one side).

Neal, great WIP but I am a bit unsure of what you mean by
(" I did the routing of all my slots on unlengthed timber first except for the box splitting to lid cut, before i mitre cut them, is it best to do it the other way round?")
Did you mean routed the slots in one length? as I think thats how I would do it and then cut and match....or over cut in length, route and shape then match
Wendy, how did you do it..... Kerry

Pretty much exactly what i meant Kerry. I guess i was unsure of myself and the procedure and the tool and my explanation. . I was working with a bunch of offcuts around the same length, and tried to apply the same technique as if they were one board. Setup the table for one slot then do all 4 boards, move to the next slot, etc.

I wasnt sure what took precedence, the mitre cutting tearouts on the routed slots, or the router tearouts on the 45 degree'd corners.

My work went full time so i've not had the chance to do the glue up as yet, perhaps i'll get back into it over the weekend.

    Neal.

on the most recent squiggle top box, the squiggles were dowelled into place on top of the lid using toothpicks as dowells as the timber thickness was about 8 mm

On the original squiggle top box, I made a small rebate and again, toothpick dowelled the squiggles into the rebate area.

Neither methods are what I call ultimate, so there will be a few more squiggle top boxes coming out of my shed working on some new ideas for joining the squiggles to the box lid.

Well Done Neil! i reckon you've gotten the box bug well and truly now

Very cool Neal. It's got a bit of a 60's mod feel to it. I like it a lot.

Hey Thompy, this looks like it will be an interesting box. Don't forget to post some pics of the finished box. Nice to meet you at the show mate. Cheers from 'Freezing' Cairns NQ
