Default A box I made long time ago

This is the first box I ever made 42 years ago. I made it for my mother as a sewing box for her odds and ends and she used it up until 3 years ago when she passed away.

The timber is cedar and the finish was french polish. I had no tools at the time other than a hand saw so I just butted the joints for the box. The lid was an idea I had as a feature and was intended to look like shells on the beach.

I collected the shells from the beaches in Queensland and created the sand effect of the top of the lid with woodfiller and just stuck the shells into the woodfiller. Some of the shells have come off and been lost but only a few of them. As you can see the joints started to fail some time ago but was still functional. I can't remember what I padded the box with but the material was a sateen type material. The french polish has deteriorated somewhat but considering this was a box that was used on a daily basis, it didn't do too badly for 42 years. Hope you like it, my mum did.

It's no longer used. I just keep it as a memory.
    Reality is no background music.
    Cheers John

Its nice to look back on things that you have made in the past and the memories.

Thanks for sharing that. So much history, affection, and memory in that box. And amazing too that those hinges have stood up to frequent use for all that time. I won't be around to see what my boxes are like in 42 years, but I would like to think that some will still have use.
