    Default Box top que

I'm making some boxes for the family. The finished product will measure 8 x 10 inches x 4 inches high. Because the material was not wide enough to make a one piece top, I'm using the the picture frame and panel insert style. I've used this method before and have always left the insert "loose" but this time the top will finish out at 1/2 inch thick. Should I go ahead and use the loose panel method or glue it up solid? A dab of glue in the middle of the end grain sides works well, holds the panel in place & if the panel shrinks it shouldn't crack.

Use the 'loose panel' method, but as RGP says, put a spot of glue in the centre of the ends.
