box tops/bottoms
I've just bought a new gifkins dovetail kit and I'm very much at the experimental stage
so far I've been cutting a groove in the inside bottom edge perimeter with a 6mm router bit and then a corresponding tongue on the base to make it flush on the bottom edge and a similar scenario on the lid
just wondering what other ways I could do this to enhance the appearance and maintain the general strength
any ideas appreciated
cheers
Hodgo

Have you caught up with the livestreams that Col has been doing on Sunday mornings and can be watched again on Youtube afterwards. He has lots of good information on box design and execution.

Hi Hodgo, You must be pretty close by, I'm Valla Beach. Been to Col's place several times and got all my stuff from him. Sounds as though your making your bases 6mm thick, or am I misinterpretting?

I have been catching up with Col’s videos on YouTube in recent weeks. I don’t have a gifkins jig but love watching what he does. Maybe one day.

Howdy Paul
I'm in Old Bar, I've entertained the idea of driving up to Coffs to pick up but its a bit far to be practical
I've made a base 12mm thick and put a rebate around the bottom edge leaving a tongue 6mm thick that locates into the 6mm groove making the bottom (close to) flush
just wondered if there was a different way to do it
cheers

Hi Hodgo, Old Bar, nice, yes a bit of a drive from up this way. You would have gained a lot driving up to Col's place and buying your outfit from him. And soaked up some of his knowledge also. 12mm for a base is pretty massive. As per Col's videos all my bases are 4mm thick. I set the rebate cutter to cut 6mm from the base of my base (just after my dovetails are done before glueing). This gives me 3mm for my little feet (as per Col's videos), and then another 3mm to the base. So to put this into perspective, the top of my base would be 10mm from the ground.
Good luck,
Paul
