    Default Some more boxes

Hi all, here is my second and third attempt at making some small boxes. The larger box is made from Durian and Blackwood and small one has a Tiger myrtle lid and the box is made from redbean.

Both boxes are finished with Wipe on Ploy, I did have a little bit of trouble with the finish on the Tiger Myrtle, it had a small patch that seemed to keep soaking up the finish. I ended up putting about 10 coats on the lid to get a finish that was even. This was my first attempt using a wipe on finish. The Durain and Blackwood box i coated with a sanding sealer first and that seemed to help get a nice even finish/shine. Any tips from more seasoned users would be greatly appreciated.

Both boxes have a red flocking finish inside them, in these warm conditions its difficult to get a nice even coat of the powder as the glue is starting to dry before applying the powder. i think my next attempt i will just use standard felt.

The Durian/Blackwood box isn't 100% complete yet as i'm waiting for the pull and lid stay to arrive in the mail.

    thanks for looking

Nice work! I love that tiger myrtle lid.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

    Some nice work Stevo,
I spent the weekend in Tassie, from Burnie to Straughn, Deloraine, Smithton, Penguin and Launceston and was not too impressed by the box making. Your boxes would hold up very well.
    regards

    Thanks for your kind words.

The barrel hinges...hmmmm.....this was my first attempt at fitting them. They worked out pretty well, if i do more in the future i will make up a jig to use on the drill press. I have a few more boxes planned when i get some more time.

    thanks again, stevo

Excellent boxes. I also love the tiger myrtle lid.

I have used wipe-on on some redgum pieces i made earlier and they needed atleast 3 to 4 coats before i got some good biuld up with a total of up to 7 coats to finish. I didn't use any sealer, only grain filler.
