My Latest Boxes
Hi all, I've been very slack lately in regards to putting up photos on here. A couple of times I attempted something in IE, it never worked so I gave up. I am now using Google Chrome, lets see how it goes.
These are two very similar boxes that I have just finished, kind of like big brother and little brother. In the larger one the timbers I have used are Kwila (sides) and Poplar (ends), with a mixture of those forming the lid. The insert in the lid is Jelutong. The tray is made from Sally Wattle, with the base of the tray being Red Mahogany and the base of the main box being Paulownia.
In the smaller one the timbers I have used are White Beech (sides) and Swamp Mahogany (ends). The lid I have used Red Mahogany and Jelutong, with a Tasmanain Blackwood insert.
The tray is made from Sally Wattle with a Meranti base. The base of the main box is Paulownia.
I've lined all of the boxes with suede. The ring holders are a very simple idea and work fine. They are just 1/2" foam with the adhesive backed suede and bent over. Nice and cushiony for the rings to slide in to.
My own home made danish oil and buffed with wax provides a very nice finish.
Regards, Paul

I love the patterns you have created for your boxes. Just the things I like to see.
Regarding internet explorer, I have been locked out of this forum for months and today is the first time I have been able to sign in after so long.
So perhaps you could try again.woody U.K.

Hi there Hermit, My drum sander turned out excellent. I am totally happy with it. Probably one of, if not the best tool I have now. Just so simple to push a piece of timber or two, through it several times and get a very nice finish. I only use two grades of sandpaper on it now. 120 and 240. Sometimes I don't even use the 240 if I know I still have to do a bit of hand sanding to finish it off. You did see the photos of the finished article,...they are on here somewhere. By the way you might recollect that I purchased two of those 2HP motors 1400 rpm. And then had my bandsaw motor repaired. Well it only lasted a couple of months and then died again. So my spare brand new motor went onto my old 30 year old bandsaw. That'll see me out new (I think). Regards, Paul

Yeah, I did see it finished, but was just wondering how well it was working. Great tool, in my opinion, too. Aside from my bandsaw, mine was my best investment. I use it almost daily.
They're certainly quieter than using a thicknesser, albeit a bit more time consuming.
I tend to use 80G for thicknessing, then 120G and 240G as you do.
Glad to hear you're happy with it. Good job.
Sorry to hear about your bandsaw motor, I would have thought the repair would last longer.... Steve

How do you get on with dust using a bobbin sander, does it all drop down or is there a lot of airbourne dust you have to deal with?

Regarding my drum sander, I think my photos showed it connected to that 1HP dust extractor I bought from Gasweld for around the $200 mark. It's designed as a under the bench type one, mine just sits on a bench next to where I roll my drum sander to, connect it up and I wouldnt even need a dust mask on. Although I do usually put on one. The dust extractor works brilliant, a very nice partner for my drum sander.
