My latest two boxes
Hi all,
Just wanted to share a couple of boxes that I finished yesterday. One was a box that a chap wanted to hold his four antique fountain pens in. He wanted it in cedar, he also didn't want it hinged. He wanted the lid to swivel on the ends of the box. I am reasonably happy with the outcome, it does look very "antiquey" to me. I hope he likes it. The other box, I am not exactly sure of the timber in this box, I seem to think it could be brush box or blue box,.?. It's 250mmx170mmx80mm and holds about 50 rings. The finish has come up excellent on this box, as smooth as.
Regards,
Paul

Very impressive work!!
I would say the second box looks more like Blackbut or mountain ash.

Hi and thanks Gentlemen,
I like that 50 years comment, as it was for "antique fountain pens", so somehow unintentionally I got that look. I think it's just the cedar really that gives it that aged appearance look.
Unfortunately both those boxes are gone now, just packaged them up tonight to post away tomorrow.
Blackbutt, hmm, very interesting,...!!

Paul

Paul, excellent job on both boxes. I really like the Cedar one in particular the simple style with the hinged lid and that you have managed that aged look to it. I am thinking that you have two very happy customers as a result.

Well done Paul, beautiful work. I particularly like the 2nd box, looks to me like Tas Blackbutt that my niece had laid on her unit floor recently.
With the mitre joints, are you relying directly on glue, or did you add a spline?regards,
Dengy

Hi there Dengue,
And thanks for your kind remarks. Just glue, just ordinary old Selly's Aquadhere, never had a problem with it yet. Sometimes I use the rapid set one, depends how much time I have to apply and clamp up etc, as it goes off pretty fast.
I've got another couple of boxes on this site where I have used mitre keys, but really only for appearance sake.
I've built every piece of timber furniture in this house and done heaps of purely glued and clamped butt joints, never had a problem yet,
Regards, Paul

Hi Dengue,
Geez, that is a bit of a mess, how did it all turn out. All I do is, prior to glueing, sand the inner sides of the box to maybe about 400 grit. Try not to get much glue that is going to run inside the box, clamp up, and leave to dry. My outer box will then be sanded, most likely on my belt sander to tidy up the corners, and the outer sides. I've never really got into any strife, always comes out pretty nice and neat and clean,
Regards, Paul
