    Default Some Small Boxes

Here are a few small boxes I made this last week. I had the stock milled for awhile and hadn't gotten around to assembling and finishing them. The one on top is Cherry with walnut panel and mitered keys. I did take pictures of the interiors but they didn't turn out.. to blurry... the chery box is lined with walnut. The lower one on right is mahogany and a spalted maple panel in the lid, maple keys and lined with mitered maple. The lower left is maple with crotch walnut top. I lined with blue velvet on the bottom. Temporary as I want to put ring rolls in these boxes. The maple and walnut box has slotted hinges. Love that new arbor and hinge saw! Needed to put a light amount more of chamfer on the back to allow open full 90. Thanks for looking!

Nice stuff. I like the one bottom left in the first photo - has the best contrast of colours for mine.

    Well done!

Nice boxes, with interesting combinations of woods. Perhaps I would have done the sides just a tad thinner?

Did you do solid wood bases?

Is the lower left front mitre key broken in the box in the last photo?

Thanks all. I learned alot on these boxes. These were my first panel in lid boxes, first boxes I sawed in half and the one is my first hinged box other than pin hinges.
Zenwood....thank you and I have to agree, the maple one is tad under a 1/2 inch where the rest are 3/8 . Definitely the 1/2 needs to be smaller in thickness and even the 3/8 boxes have a bulkier look than what I wanted. I think making them a little deeper from front to back would help, they are only 2 1/2 deep that way. I guess maybe 5/16ths would be better for this exact side but doesn't leave much for the panel daddo but doable. As far as the bottoms, no these are hardboard bottoms since I placed and velvetine wrapped cardstock. I have used a wood bottom on a couple boxes but when I plan on lining, I use hardboard or mdf. I want to put ring rolls in all of these actually.
I think my favorite is the Cherry and walnut. In person the cherry has a nice worm color and the crotch walnut just works well with it I think.

    Thanks again,
    Corey

I just realised, these boxes are quite similar to the ones I made (though without hinges) here:

Very much so Zenwood. The maple and walnut is the only one with hinges. The other two are lined with mitered 1/8 maple or walnut. Yours are a little longer and wider too. Nice ones and thanks again!

That's why I like to put my hand somewhere in one of the photos: gives an immediate sense of scale.
