    Default New Boxes

Just finished 2 boxes. One is O.K., the other a flop.

First is the final shots of the WIP posted last week. The book box. Looks O.K. but the edges don't stand close expection. However as my first attempt at veneer, it's not too bad. It's Jarrah frame with Jarrah burl veneer over ply.

Second is not so good. The problem is the design. It just doesn't work. It's also too small and actually usless for anything except maybe pens.
One of those concepts that just flops. Casurina with aluminium posts and the inner box is Rock Maple.

Great boxes, Its amazing how many concepts can be created as boxes.

A box can in my opinion be classed as an ornament in addition to its normal use.

The wording , have I missed a WIP of yours on how it was done?

Geez Dan that book box looks great. i have to get some of that awesome burl. As for the second one, you just havent found the right thing to put in it yet. i dont think anything is a failure unless you dont learn something from it, so lets call it an experimental piece
    Thanks Kev.

    Dan,

your output of beatiful boxes is breathtaking. Which miracle machines do you use?

Let me guess: you have CNC based hitec router machine where you speak in a micro: Do me that box!

    Detlef,

HOW DID YOU KNOW? WHO TOLD YOU ABOUT MY SECRET MACHINE? HAS SOMEONE BEEN TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OF MY WORKSHOP?

If I had such a machine I don't think I'd use it. No fun in that. More fun to experiment.

Really like the boxes! I have discovered some of my best? ornamentation tricks hiding mistakes. Don't ever seem to learn anything without having stuffed up first.

I actually prefer the second box: it's got a bit of mystery and intrigue, and a delightful sculptural form. The mix of materials I find interesting too.

Don't write it off. Keep looking at it.

Why not do another one a bit bigger?

Like zenwood I think the idea of the second box should be expanded, howabout a horizontal opening in lieu of the vertical liftoff? just a thought?
