Made my first boxes a month or so ago.
I imagine everyone has a crack at boxes.
These were from off cuts I had in the shed.
Some spotted myrtle someone gave me. It was an 80mm x 80mm block probably sold for use as pen blanks.
There is some huon, teak, rosewood, camphor and stuff I'm not sure about.
The keys in the mitre joins are made from the keys of a piano I broke up.
Lift off lids - I'm not up to hinges.
The dark box also has my first dovetails. Gee, they took a while.
Proportion is the thing I thought about most i.e. the overall dimensions of the boxes and the relationship between the thickness of the sides and the rest of the box. I reckon I got it wrong with the one made from spotted myrtle - that edging around the top is too chunky.

Hi Scott,
Welcome to the sometimes addictive often compulsive word of boxmaking
I like all three of your boxes and the use of the piano key material was a brilliiant idea!
Don’t be too put off by hinges. I recommend getting a couple of pieces of scrap pine and have a go at hinging them together. It’s a good way to learn without the stress; the worst that can happen is you stuff up a couple of pieces of scrap. Do that a few times and it’s amazing how quickly you’ll get the hang of it.
Looking forward to seeing your next boxes, Scott.

There will be another box soon, Brian. It's going to have a ceramic lid, so no hinge. My wife is a very business minded ceramicist and we've had an idea for a collaboration. It's the first time we have made something together - apart from those children we have.
