Thanks AJ, yes, I am very critical, probably too much. I just am not happy with non perfection when I’m selling something.

but as beautiful as the timbers are, they are a bugger to work with and I’ll give them a wide berth next time. Or atleast together.

    Hi Richard,

I’m with ajw on this. The box looks great and I’d be surprised if the recipient isn’t impressed.

For box tops I use birch plywood veneered both sides. Dimensionally stable and flat as a - err - board Andrew Crawford showed me the trick of gluing two thinner pieces of ply together forming a “superply” - that is to say a plywood with thinner layers but double the number.

    Best regards,

    Brian

Hi Fumbler, i have found some times that it is the lid insert that is causing the problem and not the box timber. This will happen when i book match a lid or have a large one piece lid with a twist or the book matched pieces that have opposite bows so i am able to see straight away that the lid will have a twist which will transfer to the lid frame and then result will be the problem you had.

At this point i decide that i am going to line the inside of the lid and go about running cuts which are a little deeper than half the thickness of the lid insert both in the length and width of the piece at 10-15 mm intervals. This makes the insert piece very flexible and will conform to whatever the lid frame is doing, not fight against it.

I think another piece of the puzzle is lid height, and the strength or lack thereof once you separate from the base. I think it may have been too thin. I may just have to deepen the lid in future.

I have some good news, the client loves it (from the photos) and his son who is in possession says I’m a panic merchant and I shouldn’t be worried. Still I can’t help but be concerned.

    thanks for all the support.

Thanks Brian, I did however mention to the client that should anything go wrong, I will repair or replace, however I know exactly which part may go first and that's the Huon Pine lid inset, so I will be prepared to reset a new lid insert. I might make one now close to the size and leave for a few years to get its movements over and done with now. Anyway, back to the medal box and my daughters jeweller box.
