    Default Boxing With Burl

I have a regular client who called one day to offer me free timber, her grandfather had passed and there was a quantity of timber and i could take what i wanted as long as i made her mother a box. Most of it were just offcuts of unknown timber that i was not interested in bit i did come away with 2 burls, again species unknown but i believe they are Red Gum and Brushbox as well as a 50mm thick Red Cedar slab that had been cut in the shape of a shield.

Both burls had voids that rendered any material sliced off them very unstable so i sliced thick at 15mm and for the Red Gum i veneered 3mm slices of the Red Cedar with a book matched lid and for the Brushbox i used some Euro Beech that i already had on hand from a previous job with the lid being one piece. There was no way i was going to attempt hinge lids so settled for lift off lids.

Both boxes are finished with Constantia 100% Organic oils.

Well you're certainly up for a challenge. How you cut and finessed those mitres without losing a chunk of burl is totally beyond me - sanding? A very impressive demonstration of your skills.

A beautiful and unique result on both of them. The recipient will be well pleased with whichever one she gets.

Really, double.d? Must you post stuff like this that makes me sit up excited?
Mate, they are awesome, this would have to be one of the nicest uses of burl timber I have ever seen.
Now I have to find some time to have a go as well.

Wow what a skill being able to machine and cut mitres would have been a work of art, congratulations on a great job.

Thanks guys, at every stage of the process there were chunks falling off but i just persevere and do the best. Sharp blades and router bits help.
