Camphor Laurel box
Latest work. The size and position of the compartments were dictated by the proposed use.
The material chosen by the client was camphor laurel, but the board wasn't quite wide enough for the lid, so myrtle strips were fitted to the edges to make up the width.
The sides, top and bottom were dressed and cut to size, and a dry fit up done. The lifter on the lid was shaped, and again, a dry fit up to mark out the cut out for it in the front.
Before the glue up, the materials were sanded to 800 grit, given a light coat of shellac and resanded. The hinges are 1/8" brass rods, running in brass bushes in the sides and lid.
The dividers are 1/8" CL, mortised into the sides and each other. These were assembled, oiled and glued before the final glue up. (Not shown)
Everywhere there was likely to be squeeze-out was given a smear of wax, which was cleaned of using a toothbrush and white spirits later. After the glue up (Titebond) myrtle slipfeathers were fitted.
The assembled box was given four coats of Kunos oil.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

A beautiful box indeed!
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Nice! Getting past the great c/laurel, I really like how you set the lid flush and the tab sitting out proud to open it.
