Wendy, I like the look of that box, is it possible to have the same colour hinge on the inside as the outside?? Amos

Nice Wendy. You're managing to get the size of those gaps down with each new box

Gaps and Squiggles - that's me all over
"Play it" hmm - inspiring comment, Donna
You're right Amos. I should have, but.....

This box was supposed to be built a couple of months ago, but the squiggles didn't work out the way I wanted them to, so I put it aside until it sorted itself out. Once the Challenge Box was finished, the squiggles wanted to be part of the action, so I figured out the main part of the box and then the lid just fell into place.
It was supposed to be a money box for HWMNBO, where the coins would knock the camphor laurel, releasing more of the camphor laurel scent, but I'm now revising that idea as it would be a shame to have it knocked around. I just might have to make another.
As the box was for HWMNBO, I just wanted a sturdy hinge and that was the only one I had on hand, same for the catch.
I decided to keep the front and back flat, so the sides and top are a bit of a surprise when you get to see them. It also ensures the squiggles don't overpower the box as well.
Lots of fun putting it all together, I had to finish the side pieces first, join the squiggles to make the sides solid and then put the box together. The idea for the lid took ages to figure out, as did the resawing by hand, but it was all worth it in the end.
cheers

Very nice Wendy. Something different from the traditional run of boxes.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Thanks Guys and Gals
Typical of me, I forgot to add that it was finished with, can you guess? Ubeaut's Hard Shellac, EEE Ultrashine and Traditional Wax. It's about the standard size of the box that I make, ~ 250-300 mm long x ~180 wide and ~ 180 high.
Just need to attach a strap to stop the lid from flopping back. I like the hinge movement, smooth, strong, takes a number 4 screw very nicely. Must get some more from the WoodWork Show next year.
I do like playing with the conventional box style and bending the idea just a little.
Cheers
