Love how you showed off the bold grain pattern.

Are those lids coved on the underside? (the frame of the lid I mean) It looks like it in the pics

I do love the grain patterns in the old growth cedar. The lids are flat except for a shaped section for finger access. In a previous post of mine i used coves on the front of the telephone table but that was in river red gum. i like the technique but am wary of the sideways thrust on the blade.

Keith, I agree, i love working with red cedar, although you have to be wary of the softness as it marks so easily.

Hi Crocy, The sides were about 20mm and the top about 15mm. I don't work from dimensioned drawings but dress up the timber from the rough sawn stock - see pic - and work from whatever size it ends as. I can resaw if i need thinner sections and the base is thick enough.

That looks like a nice supply of figured timber for future projects. There's more satisfaction cutting your pieces from rough timber and sizing it yourself.

Hi Dallas, Yes i was very lucky be be given these boards and some more. Cedar is kind to the machinery and i enjoy trying to get the best selection grain.

Hi Owen, thanks for the reply. I am getting towards the final stages of my move and I found a large quantity of Red Cedar slabs and boards that I milled around 30 years ago that were buried at the back of one of my shipping containers. I have no idea what I will do with them so I may run a few into boards like you used. I have moved nearly 30 odd tonnes so far, only 4 or 5 more to go and some people are going to laugh at how I forgot about it, but it has been good finding all these gems buried for so long.
