Chess & drafts set box
I've just given this] chess & draughts set its last coat of oil and its now set to go to the client.
It's been an interesting journey. First, I had to improve my turning skills, as I've never turned chess pieces before. Then I had to learn to sew, to make the velvet bags to contain the chess men.
Anyway, I'm pleased with the result. The Australian red cedar that I used for the chess board came up really well, but unfortunately, it was too gnarled for me to turn, so I had to use lighter cedar and stain it.
The hinges came from Lee Valley, and are the only ones I cold find that looked good.

Very impressive Alex, lovely. that would have taken ages to make that. And turning those chess men, wow, huge job. I made two sets once, one for a grandson and one for me. But I cheated with the chess pieces and the draughts pieces, I bought them.
Very nice indeed,
Paul

Very elegant indeed, Alex. Congratulations.
What type of timber did you use for the white squares on the board? Is that also cedar?
Best regards,
Brian

beautiful work Alex if you chose to make more chess pieces they can be made on the scroll saw ,patterns are from Stevegood and while fidly are achievable probably a bit easier than turning and the results are very good.
