    Default Chisel box

I recently purchased a set of Japanese chisels and thought it proper that they should have their own home.

Box is simple enough....... Murray River Redgum, mitred corners, shellac and beeswax finish.

It's hard to see but the lid is beveled on 4 sides towards the centre.

On the inside, I fitted blocks of redgum to keep the chisels from hitting one another.

No catches or knob as yet.........really, I don't think it needs it.

Very nice job, lovely wood. Maybe some earth magnets for keeping it closed?

That's a very clean bench, is it new or have you just re-furbished it?

    Regards,

    Thanks for all your comments.

I used to have a freestanding workbench but it encroached to much into my available floorspace in my 20' x 12' shed, so I decided I would build a narrower bench against the side wall. I had a stack of 4 x 2 clear oregon studs which I had rescued from going to the tip after a house demo. I thicknessed them down to 60mm x 40mm and laminated them all together with Titebond 2 and screws. It's holding together very well and has freed up a lot of floor space.

    I hope it doesn't either!!

It's been a few months since I've made the box and as yet hasn't moved a fraction.

The kiln dried timber used were offcuts from stair risers and were too good to chuck out.

Nice job , I got too many chisels to make boxes for ,mine hang in a rack on the wall , where I have space .One set is in a drawer .

    Hi Billy,

What they all said. Love that Red Gum, the quilted sides look great. I bet the top is very nice to rub your hand over with the slight bevels.

Like the Oregon bench top as well, strong but relatively light.

    Beautiful box Billy.
I really like the way that you have used the wood grain to advantage.
A couple of questions if I may.
    How is the lid done?
At first glance the whole box seems to be cut from one solid piece of timber as you have arranged the grain so beautifully.
I am guessing that the edges of the lid were once part of the sides. Where did the top come from?
The shaping is very subtle - very nice.
