    Default Chisel storage box

Yet another box underway[emoji3]. My old Marples chisels need a new home so I decided to make a little Blackwood box for them.

I used hand cut dovetails on this one since it’s been a while I’ve cut some by hand. Not perfect but it will do just fine.

Nice start on the box Jacques. I need to do some more handcut dovetails instead of relying on machines to do all the work for me. Too impatient I think as I just want to get the joinery out of the way.
Is that locally grown NZ Blackwood or imported?

    Hi Jacques,

Nice box - if it’s Tassie Blackwood that’s one of my favourite woods (other than the damn splinters it gives me). Look forward to seeing what you do with this.

These old chisels deserve a good home, don’t they?. There’s something warm and magical about them. I have a smart set of Sorby chisels brand new that never come out of the box. My go-to’s are three beautiful old Japanese chisels (2mm and 2x3mm) I picked up at the Hand Tool Preservation sale plus two old Stanleys (1/2 inch and 1 inch) that are 40 years old? You’ve inspired me to make a box (or a rack) for them.

    Best regards,

    Brian

Hi Dallas, not sure if it’s local or imported. I got a few boards from a guy in Matamata (home of the Hobbits from Lord of the Rings). One thing I know it’s hard as rocks.

I like doing them by hand by the old eyes struggle these days to saw to the line, hence why I typically use a jig of some sorts. I recently acquired a Gifkins but still need to familiarise myself with the offset for the saw kerf. Doing it by hand it’s easy enough to add 3mm to one pin/tail.

Cheers Brian, don’t get me started on chisels [emoji3]. I have way too many sets that what’s needed. I can almost throw a “hand cut chisel party”, invite a few friends over and hand them each a set of chisels to practise with. But yes, I love old chisels, the older the better. What makes these old Marples special is that the tangs were hand forged as per the photos and it’s. relatively big set I collected over the years.

I will hunt down a photo and upload shortly.

The Marples Beveled Edge Firmer chisels which this box is made for are made prior to 1950 as per this excellent resource from Roger Ball below.

We visited Hobbiton when in NZ and really enjoyed what they have done there, very picturesque. I have never seen the movies and thought it would be boring, but my wife wanted to go as she has seen them many times. Glad we did
When I remove the lids from boxes after using the Gifkin's Jig I use a 1.6mm Slot Cutter and you can hardly see the difference where the small space is. Maybe one day I will purchase the proper spacers and use them but for now I am happy with the look.

There is something very special about an old, well made tool, that is still being loved and used.

Some progress for today. Managed to rebate the bottom and top, glue in the dovetails, seperate the lid and make a little tray for the top layer of chisels.

Made some hooks to latch the lid from some old nails. Was looking better in my mind but I guess it will do. I also blacked out all the other brass hardware etc.

It will have to sit for a while now as I wont be able to get back to it for a few weeks.

I had a few minutes this afternoon so quickly fitted the hardware. I routed out the hinge recess with my Dremel, the rest are straight forward.

I should be able to finish it off when I get a chance next.

Near the end now. Is it going to get any sort of finish applied?

Definitely [emoji3], probably some type of oil finish. I haven’t used my walnut oil for a while, either that or perhaps a danish oil? The colour should come out beautifully.
