When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Those will sand out with the final finish. For some reason my irwin quick-grip clamps leave these oily marks on some timbers. I should perhaps give the plastic tabs a good clean?

Et voila! It’s finally done. I finished the Blackwood with a couple of coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil, it gives a lovely sheen to the timber.

For scale I took a photo of the biggest chisel next to my scale ruler. It’s a nice 1.5inch wide chisel which will outlive a few generations to come. He is a new addition to the set and hence the reason for the new box as he didn’t fit into the old box I had [emoji4].

I just need to purchase a couple of those moisture absorbing sachets to keep the rust away.

The hardware came out nice and rustic with the blueing on the brass, it’s not very durable but it gives a nice aged patina to the brass. The locking hooks, being opposed to each other, keeps the lid locked regardless of which way you tilt the box. I shall definitely play with the forging a bit more.

And finally, my little chisel hammer. It’s a pity I didn’t size the box for it to fit. I shall be making a slightly smaller version over the Xmas break I reckon as it would be quite functional in the box together with the chisels.

    Hope you enjoy.

That's come up really nicely with the Tru Oil. Pity about the little mallet not fitting. Is it possible to remove the handle and shorten it a bit as it is a nice piece of spalted wood you have used.
What is your procedure for restoring the blades on you chisels as they look almost like new?

Thanks, I’m starting to like Blackwood more and more. For the chisels I use a Scotch-Brite belt on my belt grinder, coarse then medium then fine. That usually takes a bit of rusted metal all the way to as new.

Here is a photo of some of the chisels as I got them. I collected them over the years and they came in various conditions. I only looked for the older ones with the hand forged square shoulders/ tangs. The more modern ones has a machine turned, round shoulder/tang section.

The other photo is of the set in its old box, before I acquired that 1 1/2” monster.

Your method sure works well to take them from the bits of rusted metal to what they look like in the end. Are the replacement decals available to buy to replace the damaged ones on the handles?

You can get replacement decals from Roger Ball at the website linked above. The ones on these chisels I made myself though, they are not as good as Rogers but they will do.
