    Default Column Corners on Box

Just experimenting with an idea for putting an "interesting" column on the corners of a box.

Basically, its just a standard dovetail joint, and then cut away half the thickness of the sides leaving the column corner proud.

Execution may not be quite so simple.

    Graeme,
Me thinks that that corner detail is extraordinarily wasteful in terms of material that requires removal.
Can I suggest that the corners be constructed as a separate part attached to the box via a tenon?
    regards from Alberta, Canada

That wastage question, Ian, was one of the reasons that I posted it. I was hoping that someone else may have tried it.

The wasteage must be in the order of 40-45%. Make a Maloof chair and the wastage must be 50-60%, and for a balloon back chair its probably around 70%. So the waste factor is not unprecedented. And boxes are small.

My concept was that the corner columns would be the feature of the object - integral in its conception and construction. Complex grains and expensive woods would simply distract one's focus. Thus inexpensive, bland but close grained timbers.

I hadn't really thought about adding the feature with a tennon. My preliminary thoughts are that it would look like an add-on and not an integral part of the design. Also more small partsraises questions about how to actually construct that component; would the extra effort justify the saving in wood?

Finally there is the HTF did he do that, factor? Not everyone will be able to identify the pins and the tails, or even know that it is relevant.
