couldn't wait box
Whilst waiting for glue to set on a box lid for that new idea box today, I got out a selection of wood samples I had come by !
They measure 100mmx47mmx10mm thick and I selected 6 timber varieties.
Idigbo, Eur.beech, Meranti, Basswood, Am.Cherry & Iroko.
(3 light & 3 darker)
My intention is to make 6 boxes approx 100mmx 50mm, and these are to be used for storing watercolour tube paints. I am hoping the boxes will then fit inside a larger box to be constructed and would be then called my artist watercolour box.
So six varieties as per pic. below.
and the first session of corner mitre cuts,
and then the second session of jointing cuts.
They are not the slightest problem to cut to size using my mitre cutting board and clamps as per photographs below.
So that was 48 joints cut (6 x 4 x 2) in around an hour.woody U.K.

That jig sure works fine. No movement during the cuts.

No movement with that many clamps and that temporary upright support timber with clamp stops my hand from wandering towards the blade.
Also there is a return support that bears along under the tablesaw that hold the jig down to the tabletop.
Gardening again today, got to get the seelings out to those flower boxes.woody U.K.

Returned to this box today and had a change of mind again, I am turning the design into a trinket box.
So played around with the cut pieces, played with them like building bricks of nearly seventy years ago and have come up with this design.
So setting up the router to make lid recesses and bases and then makeup a lid design using same wood lids as box bases.
See yeh.
PS. gardening and visitors have delayed the construction of this box.

Managed to get in two sessions in the workshop this week, (house maintenance etc. causing delays, )
So the box carcasses have now been completed and glued to form.
Bases have been cut and preparation started for lids which I intend to do with contrasting edges.woody U.K.

Lids have now been machined and sanded to size enabling each one to drop on to carcass.
Contrasting edges cut from my remaining piece of Wenge, (shall have to order some more)
glued up all edges, and hopefully I can get the job finished today because I have got another new idea and its not a box.

That's an interesting design, I particularly like the contrasting tops.

Finished awaiting a coat of shellac & a wax polish.
Decided to picture it with the other two contrasting boxes completed this year but also awaiting the wax polish. (will do that this afternoon, promise)

The individual pieces are lovely by themselves, but in the group they prove once again that the whole is more than just the simple sum of the parts. These boxes belong together.
