    Default Couple small boxes

Here's a couple small boxes made with scrap around the shop. Just because they are small doesn't mean it was smooth sailing. The bigger box is bird's eye maple with walnut. You'll notice the lovely walnut bottom. I should call it the upside down box since I cut off the bottom instead of the top, that resulted in a birdseye maple top which turned out okay. That's what happens when you set it aside for a couple months and forget everything you had planned. The other box is a simple curly maple and walnut. It was suppose to be a little taller but a brain fart resulted in some cool dados on the outside of two sides. That's what I get for trying to be fancy and prep the stock for the bottom prior to cutting the sides. All in all it was a good reminder to pay attention even on small stuff.

I'm laughing at your description of the making - reminds me of me. Its so easy to lose track as you say.

But, the boxes turned out very nice. Great colour and nice tight joints. I'd say, for those.

Beautiful boxes. You have got those mitre keys perfect! Lovely colour contrast and the pattern of key lengths is very attractive. With the longer keys, did they come through on the inside of the box to support a shelf, or did you trim them?

Your designs inspire me to get started again myself. (I have an unheated workshop so have to wait another couple of months). Please show more of your work please.

The sides were about 3/4" thick so the longer key was close but didn't come through the inside. Since it was more of a looker than a user I didn't worry about the size of the inside so much but concentrated on the outside.

I agree with Cisco and the others.. Good looking boxes. I am jealous of the weather that allows you to be making at the moment. My workshop is unheated too, and with the severest winter in the last 20 odd years, I am not working in minus 20 degree temperatures!! One shouldn't wish time away, but bring back the sun and bring back the light to Scotland....
