A couple more boxes (Mahogany, Walnut)
IMG_4116.JPGIMG_4117.JPGIMG_4109.JPGIMG_4112.jpg
A couple of boxes recently finished as gifts for people. Both boxes have continuous grain around all four sides, using the resawing/bookmatching technique.
The mahogany box is for a guy at work who is retiring at the end of the year. The inlay is the company logo. (It's a coaster that the marketing dept had made up. I've just inlaid it into the panel.)
First time I've use mahogany. It's really lovely to work with, and finishes nicely.
Comments welcome. I think my workmanship is getting better, but there are still imperfections I'd like to see removed!
Cheers,
ajw

Thanks for all the nice compliments. I'm working on a couple of jewellery boxes at the moment. They are for my daughters. The boxes have a sassy veneer, but it hasn't worked well. I'm now stripping it out and replacing it. Pics will follow.
Merry Christmas to all.

Beautiful boxes, ajw, well done, and many thanks for sharing.
The boxes are beautifully proportioned. Can you please give us some idea of the sizes, and some details on how you made the lids - they look great?regards,
Dengy

Thanks for the nice feedback.
Dengue, the process for making the lids isn't too difficult. I don't have any photos from this project, but I've done a sketchup drawing to show you how I do it. Start with dimensioned stock that is square and straight. Then cut the 45 degree mitres. I use a home-made jig for this, to ensure accurate angles. Then I use a routher in a router table to cut the rebate for the panel to fit into. Using blue tape, I then assemble the frame and cut the panel to fit. It's then glued together. After it dries, I cut the various profiles (rounded top, shadow line rebate) that I'm after. To fit the lid to the box, I use a straight bit and gradually take away stock until I get a nice fit in the box. Here's a link to an old project that has some photos that might help explain it.

Hope that helps.
cheers,
ajw
