    Default Craft box lid hinge

    Onto my second box project.

I am going to be making my girlfriend a craft box. It is going to be modeled on a woodworkers tool box. It is going to have lift out sliding totes with retractible handles so that the totes are stored flat. They will be sliding on rials that get successively closer together as you go down. The top totes will be 400mm long and the bottom ones will be 310mm long. The rails will be planks on the front side and the back side of the chest. Each set of rails will be nested in the wider ones. I plan on there being 3 totes across being 200mm wide leaving a 200mm space for sliding the tote/trays across. The bottom layer will have 4 totes. The chest will be about 1000mm long. It is going to be about 460mm high. I plan on 4 levels of trays. 3 120mm high and one 90 mmhigh. I may make the fourth tote for each level in case she is willing to remove a few totes just to get at the others in the chest and perhaps as spares if she does not.

I am looking for some advise on lid hinge construction. I want it sturdy, simple and clean. If anyone knows any good resources for researching hinges for chest lids please send me some links.

Sounds like a great project, Hinges required are dictated by the method you are going to use to install them. Butt hinges or something else. there are heaps of hinges on the market but for that size box you will need something sturdy, don't opt for the cheap hinges that will just twist and buckle the first time you open the box. A wooden hinge would look great on something like a craft box. Good luck with your project
    Reality is no background music.

While I really like 'munruben's" idea of wooden hinges, do you suppose it might matter what the weight of the craft box becomes when your honey gets it packed full of all her "things?"
I'm crude = I buy tool boxes for my kids and partner to keep their things in, craft by craft.

Most serious advice, sir: build two and hide one for the time being.

I have offered to make her a tabletop loom and a spinning wheel as well.

Oh the things we do for the ones we love so they don't get grumpy at us playing with our wood all the time.
