Default Curved top boxes and round boxes

You might at some time want to make a box with a curved top. Most of us find it a bit difficult to work out the width and angles required for the staves needed to make it

Just remember the maximum height of the lid curve will be half the width of the box or a semicircle. Semicircle shaped lids are not the most attractive in my opinion but are the easiest to calculate. If you want less of a rise, then it gets a bit more difficult as you will need to cut slightly different angles and widths on the first and last edges of the first and last staves. The overhang can then be trimmed back or even curved over once the lid is fitted.

I spent a bit of time working on a spreadsheet to help with this task. (attachment) and it will calculate all your requirements.

You will also find another calculator for making round boxes out of staves.

I just wish I was well enough to make some boxes myself!

I hope it is of some help

    Regards,

    Chipman

    Hi chipman,
Thank you for spending the time to work up the spreadsheet. It will definitely save me a hell of a lot of time.

Wish you all the best and hope you are well enough soon to get back into the shed.

    Regards

    Thanks for the good wishes....
I have been out of action for 6 mths with a broken ankle that won't heal and it looks like at least another 6 mths. Tomorrow it is off to hospital for the ankle fusion and then there is the ongoing neuralgia / arthritis. So shed time is on hold but I still enjoy doing things to hopefully help others do theirs.

    Regards
