Default Minecraft Chest - made of wood!

Here is another one. This wooden chest is a replica of a game that the kids play called Minecraft.... https://minecraft.net/

Its a blocky old fashioned 16 bit game and they are absolutely addicted. They play it endlessly.

Because its a replica of a game, its a bit grotty and out of aesthetic proportion. It was important to the recipient that it was as exact as possible. This means a complete compromise on making it look "nice"!

Exactitude was important as the game is based on pixels and the chest is exactly 16 pixels... so its exactly 160 * 160 * 160 (exact to 0.1mm all around). Thickness of all surfaces is exactly 10.0mm and the inside precisely 14.0mm.

Timber is very ordinary, just some pine I pulled off a packing crate at the shops and a piece of Merbau decking from Bunnings, plus two crappy 87 cent hinges. I made the dreadful mistake of using Danish oil and the pine went a nasty yellow colour. It looks good on the Merbau though, made it rich, but the pine looks pretty nasty.... luckily, this is the grotty look in the game too... so saved by coincidence!!

The first tray is lined with simple felt from Eckersleys, a very snug fit (but smooth). Top clips down over the top of the tray.

Inside I tried out a few tricks from reading Des Kings book (what a god) on kumiko methods. They are neat. Easy too. Practice practice practice.

There are HEAPS of mistakes. Little glue lines that don't quite match, over sanded here and there. Not bad I suppose considering its the second box I've tried.... small is VERY hard!!!!

    Ev!

Waddya mean it's only kids that play Minecraft?

I think you're underrating yourself. Despite the pine, that's a great looking box. Well done.

I agree with Alex (couldn't find a brown-nose smiley!) The slightly unusual design makes it all the more interesting and the quality looks to be right up there!

Me son is also right into this game. e keeps showing me things and I have to look impressed. I think its great. And your box is great too. Now the recipient just has to find as few diamonds and rubies.

Default minecraft chest and rubies and diamonds and emeralds and treasures!

    Wow,

thanks, didn't expect anything approaching "good" as the pine was complete crap. Rubbish. Notice how stained and nasty it is!

Hope it made some ideas spring forth!

Made ideas spring forth? Well, if stealing the idea counts, it certainly has, although I'm trying to think of a way of making the mitre joins more pixelated, as diagonals in Minecraft always have the jaggies! And...does anyone make hinge screws with square heads????

    Default Next up

Well, that proved an interesting party. Every kid there wanted one and all the adults were asking how much.

Next up is the double chest version, two wide. Since i have an incra fence this is going to be pretty easy.

Master splinter, I was going to use my new hinge crafter and make a full width hinge. As for mitres, this was a mistake but I was under the pump for time. I will use massive finger joints for the next one (1cm). I was thinking of making the sides top and bottom using a butchers block/chess board method.... Again, the incra will make this ssuper easy.

Timber will be better than the junk I used last time. Free is good, but the pine was very ordinary.

Funny, I was thinking of a butcher's block method, too, but then I thought I could get way too OCD on trying to match patterns. I think I'll limit myself to sticking to Minecraft plausible wood species (luckly, a description of 'jungle wood' provides a number of options).

If you figure out how to fit a (scale) 1,726 cubic meters of storage space inside them, let me know as my shed could use that storing method!!!
