Custom Box Commission.
Hi, my name is Rob and I run a design studio in Melbourne. This is my first time here so I hope I am doing this right.
I have a custom case I would like to have made. It is a travelling apothecary. Am I in the right place?
Essentially it is one rectangular case cut into four shallow trays (approx 52mm) which are then hinged together for use standing upright.
Inside the trays there is a matrix of regular compartments for bottles (8 x 5) plus either shallow draws or a singular lidded compartment. It is an up-right working environment akin to a show performer's wardrobe road-case. It stands 635mm tall, 261mm wide and 220mm deep when closed and 635mm tall 1046mm wide x 52 deep when the four panels (trays) are open. There are a feet and supports to stabilise it that I have not included in these measurements to keep my explanation clear.
I wish to use concealed barrel hinges, magnetic attachments for support legs, leather pulls for drawers and 3 morticed key locks. I would like to use some exotic timbers, laminates or inlays but they have not been specified.
The case will then be bound by a leather strap for transport, added security and carrying. The leather strap can be done separately by a specialist leather worker.
The intention is for the box to be both a special presentation and working space. If there is to be a design aesthetic in style of finishes it would tend toward 1930's Art Deco.
I have detailed and dimensioned drawings of the idea which we have arrived at with consultation with the client and now I need to find a maker.
Is this how a request like this is done? Looking forward to matching the project with the craftsman.
Cheers
Rob

Well, you have certainly come to the right place if you are looking for craftsmen ( not me, I am a learner, absorbing knowledge from these guys like a sponge)

Dengy
