    Default Google Sketchup

    Hi Mic,

    One more question.
Your drawings are made with Sketchup? The free version from the net? Did you learn it from the tutorials from the web?

They look pretty good, I was wondering how did you draw some of the features. I wish I could do it.

.... and I loved your tool rack made from the cupboard. I think I will copy the idea, it is awesome!
    thanks
    Kat

That is a really beautiful box.

WW suggested it was veneered. Is it solid?

I have the free sketchup and learn from the tutorials and info on the web. Sorry I can't remember exactly how I drew it but it was along the lines of creating the outline for the base (curved sections are all circular arcs), then using the offset tool to create a wall footprint and then the push/pull tool to extrude the box. Intersect planes gave me the top truncation and lid truncation. I doubt I could do it now without a few hours refresher, but it isn't hard, you just have to start. Wishing won't get you far. Do, don't wish.
Thanks for the tool cupboard feedback too!

Thank you Derek. The box is veneer on solid wood for the most part, apart from the top, which I hammer veneered my own ply panel.

    Default Sketchup

    Hi Mic,
Thanks for the tip, I missed the " Intersect planes gave me the top truncation and lid truncation." bit. I have a look how to do that.
I wanted to make sure its not a professional addition or something like that that I was admiring. I love Sketchup, thanks again.
    cheers

I'd like to do a collaboration. I submit I would be adequate to turn on the glue pot and sweep up the shavings at the end of the day and tug my forelock if he let me watch him work.

The copy of American Period Furniture 2004 arrived today and I have just finished a cursory glance over it. The first two notable differences between our methods of construction are the joinery and the serpentine front. He (through) dovetailed his sides (grain running horizontally) and used only four large blocks of pine for the serpentine front (grain appears to be running vertically) also dovetailed to the sides. He also appears to have made the components for the case and lid separately, glued the case together, and the lid, and veneered the individual pieces. I think I prefer how I constructed mine, but it is scary how similar our two WIPS appear at times.
