    Got that right!

If it were me, I'd saw all the joints loose, send everything through a drum sander, then re-glue it.

There's something about boxes that have bits that open and shut: I love it.

Should look great after you've finished with it.

We lived in China for a few years and this antique dowry box was my second daughter's prized posession. Being 'the real thing' it has handcut dovetails, mitred splined joins, through tenons, incredibly thin timber sections .... and lousy glue! The beauty of this is that if (when?) it falls apart, all of the parts are self aligning but not interchangeable. Luckily I had all of the bits. I didnt want to make it new, just repair and restore where necessary.
I pulled it apart, cleaned the old glue out of the joints that had any and only reglued those joints that were glued before. I also needed to glue the base (<1mm thick!) because it had become brittle and it was this that led to the collapse of the whole show.
I used a finish resporer to remove the grunge and soaked the removable 'rustic' brassware in good old coca cola.
The whole show was treated to Traditional Wax, 000 steel wool and voila ....

    The restoration looks great Fletty,

So I assume you didn't use rice glue on it

Great job: I love this box, and looks like a nicely done restoration.

Amazed that coke does such a good job cleaning the brassware. Maybe that's the stuff to use to clean tablesaw blades - ?
