Danish Oil recipe
A couple of months ago someone put up their version of a Danish Oil recipe where one of the ingredients was White Spirit. They said it was better than the normal recipe as it doesn't have a lingering Turps type smell which their wife was allergic to. I am pretty sure it was this forum and I have had a look through threads I thought it may have been in but have not found it.
Can anyone post a recipe that uses White Spirit.
Thanks,
Dallas

From 15 years ago....
"a common recipe for home-brewed oil finish is to mix equal parts of
boiled linseed oil,
turpentine or mineral spirits,
and plain oil-based (gloss, not satin) varnish or spar varnish
(spar includes some UV inhibitors)."

Hi Dallas,
That woulda been me for sure. My recipe is ,................equal parts of oil based polyurethane (I use gloss), ,....white spirits,,.....and boiled linseed oil.
The latter two I buy the Diggers brand. The poly buy whatever brand your local hardware sells.
I buy them in 1 litres, gives you 3 litres all up. I put them into 300 ml coca cola bottles, that gives you ten bottles. Store them away and when used, you can use each bottle down to the last drop. Unlike the Danish Oil brands from Bunnings when you use about 3/4,,....2/3, rest turns to jelly.
I love the finish.
Have a great Christmas,
Paul

Well I seem to be in a bit of a pickle here. The Danish Oil recipe was for a friend but I am in the middle of making a pen box which I wanted to use Tru Oil on and found that my bottle only had a small amount in it and and had lumps of congealed mixture in it. I can't get any locally to replace it and need the box for the weekend. I looked up a homemade recipe that I might be able to use instead and came up with equal parts of WOP, Turps & BLO. I mixed this up and applied and after 24 hours its still tacky. Last night I used some Turps and removed it as best I could. I strained the remaining Tru Oil to get rid of the lumps and used the little bit of liquid that was left to put a coat on this morning. After about 4 hours it too is still tacky so I am thinking that the congealed lumps I strained out may have been the hardeners that they put in to make it go off fairly quickly.
I am thinking of either trying the Danish Oil mixture or if it goes off to a firm surface put some Shellac over it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dallas

Hey Dallas, how did you get on with your dilemna. I really couldnt think of a way apart from trying to sand off all that original finish you put on. Maybe that was impossible to do.
I was just trying to refresh my brain with how I mixed WOP. Pretty sure it was just 1 part polyurethane and 1 part white spirits. I think you can vary that as to how thick or thin you like it. Thinner would dry off much faster and allow less time between coats.
Hence is why I only ever bought one bottle of that Tru Oil. Used it on one guitar, put it away in the cupboard, next time I got it out it was all jelly. Same with shop bought Danish Oil.

Hi Dallas,
if you’re box is still sticky, I’d get a some turps on a rag and wipe it down. Turps is the thinner for Tru-Oil. My process in short is to wipe the box with Tru-Oil but only thinly, wiping off all the excess straight away. My final coat is always 50% Tru-Oil and 50% turps. This dries very quickly and self levels nicely.
So, if you have any Tru-Oil left in the bottle I’d add some turps, give it a good long shake and see if you can squeeze a bit more usable stuff out of it.
To stop Tru-Oil from going off I put a disposable rubber glove over the top of the bottle before screwing the lid on. I also only ever punch a small hole in the foil seal at the mouth of the bottle and I keep it in a cool place.
Thinking about alternatives, you could use Osmo Oil available from Timber Zoo near you (open Thurs and Fri) or you could try Wild Outdoors in North Shore - they sell Tru-oil but I don’t know if they are open.
Good luck!
Brian

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't have any Spar Varnish Cliff and would prefer not to buy any as I already purchased a can of Poly for my brew.
I may be able to make what I have work even though it is slow drying. I applied a coat this morning and it has been tacky all day but getting on toward this evening I can see that it appears to be drying such that the tackiness has almost gone. I will put another coat on tomorrow and even if it does take all day to dry it will get me through before the weekend.
Brian, I rang Wild Outdoors yesterday to see if they were open and they were, but when I got them to check their stock of the Tru Oil they were out and the other shooting supply shop is closed. I will take note of your preservation techniques for any future bottles I buy. I do like the finish you can get with this stuff when applied correctly.
I might just stick to Paul's home brew Danish Oil and forget about trying to replicate Tru Oil.
Thanks,
Dallas

I am confused....
The OP is looking for a Danish Oil recipe which does not have turps because of its smell.
One of the recipes suggests white spirit to be used instead. Now, I understood that white spirit was the English name for what we call mineral turps.
Am I missing something here?
Also, what does WOP mean?
Cheers Yvan

Hey Dallas,
If you ever get over your dilemna, I wouldnt mind having a look at the pen box you made. I just made a rather simple pen box to hold 2 pens in. My $89 pocket lathe arrived two days ago, runs extremely smooth also, just made a little stand for it to clamp it to my bench. I'm now awaiting on my pen mandrel and a couple of pens kits to arrive, to see if this all works. If not, oh well.
I've just put my second coat of my Danish Oil (cut in with 1200 w&d) onto this pen box, to be followed by two coats of wax.

When I was doing a course on leadlighting/stained glass etc, about 12 years ago now, the teacher was teaching us glass etching using an etching compound. She got us to buy that product to ensure the glass was immaculately clean first. (I sold all my leadlighing equipment a couple of years ago after doing it for about ten years)
