Yes I find the different names for these products between countries confusing too. This is a definition I found on Wikipedia:

White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum), Varsol, Stoddard solvent, or, generically, "paint thinner", is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting.

Paul, this is a box I made recently and used the Tru Oil to finish it. I made 2 of them and had them for sale at our exhibition. Both sold very quickly whereas trying to sell a pen on its own is very slow nowadays.

Hey Dallas, I am impressed, that is a very nice box. And strangely enough, the iittle holder you made to go inside to hold the pen is exactly what I had in my head for this box I just finished. But I went with a different thought. I'll take a pic of it when its finished. I have two timber pens that I got from mates some time ago. I can totally understand what your saying about selling a pen on its own is difficult. You see them for sale at just about every craft shop you come across. But yes with a nice box to go with it, would make all the difference. People love boxes.

Talking about pens, now I have a dilemma. A bloke who bought a very large box from me (and very expensive), for his wife for Christmas has just got back to me today actually. He now wants a box to hold 24 pens,...!!!!!

Now I have to get my thinking cap out.

PS, I love your pen also.

    Hey Dallas,

As promised, this is the pen box I just made. I put the second coat of wax on today, will do the final coat tomorrow. If I make any more I'll make them maybe 10mm longer.

    Timber is sassafras and ARC

As usual, a fine example of you craftsmanship Paul. Is that spalted sassafras? I have just finished making a pen from it and it gives a much better effect in such a small area as a pen than straight BHS.
Do you drill the hole for the hinges up from the bottom and if so, how did you disguise them?

PS. Did you get the link I put in Jacques's thread for the pen inserts?

Hi and thanks Dallas, That old Sassafras does have an element of spalting in it. I bought a lot of sassafras down in Tassie 2 and a half years ago and that was a few offcuts left over. I didn't drill up from the bottom, I just used a digital caliper for some precise measuring from each end. If it was out a whisker after glueing, I touched that up on my belt sander, being such a small box.

I just looked at your link on Jacques thread now, and actually did come across that site last night. I did find another similar site in the USA called Pandora Pens. I did notice that you can cut those inserts to suit, BUT, if you do that you lose that border around them, and then it would look " a bit how ya goin". I did send a link to the bloke who wants this box and he agreed. (I was hoping he mighta changed his mind, but he hasn't, he's now come back with another idea,.....damn).

Well I got the box finished using the very small amount of Tru Oil that I had even though it was very slow drying. Unfortunately I could not get the number of coats on that i would have liked due to the need to have it finished ready for tomorrow. I waxed it up last night and buffed it up this morning.
Guess what, my new supply of Tru Oil turned up this morning. Bought it online on Tuesday night (New Year's eve) and got free express post from Mansfield. Fantastic service.
Here are a few photos of the finished items. Sorry about the quality but only done with the phone.

Lovely box, Dallas. Glad it worked out with the Tru-Oil.
