    Default Design question

I need to build some lightweight boxes that even though they don't weigh much are still strong enough to carry things. I was thinking some thicknessed pine to around 10 mm dovetailed for max strength for the front, back and sides. I'm not sure what I'll do for the base which will be where the most pressure will be. Would it be better to just glue the base and use nails or run a slot inside the box for a base to sit in? I'm sure others here have had to build lightweight, functional boxes. What have you done?

    I've done various things ..some worked..some didn't.

    Didn't work:

3mm mdf rebated into a slot 5mm deep each side.
Reason: the mdf wasn't strong enough to hold the weight of the contents.

4mm ply rebated into a 3mm slot each side.
Reason: tended to pull out with weighty contents, as I wasn't accurate enough fitting the base. (Sloppy Bugger)

    Worked:
4mm ply accurately fitted into a 5mm slot each side.
    6mm ply " " " " " " " "

Neither of the above were glued into the slot.

    Hope that helps.

I've also done the 4mm ply into a small 3mm slot with a small dab of glue into the end slots and that worked too.

Thanks, Noel, that is helpful. So glue wasn't necessary to hold the base in place, must try that.

dovetail the bottom into two of the sides -- these sides get any hand holds or grab handles
use ply for the other two sides that slides into grooves

basicly you have a big square section drawer standing on it's front

    Thanks, Ian, that makes sense.
