    Default New design tissue box

    Seeing Ironballs (of UKworkshop forum) shakereske box earlier this week, I though I would adapt the box to make a new tissue box design for me.

    So started around 09.15 and a cold start again, I dug out some of these oak offcuts.



    A change for me I got out the hand stuff.



    These two end pieces I forgot to plane down to thickness and I put them through the thicknesser at the picture size showing, never again, they went through but struggled, the rollers in the thicknesser had difficulty catching the timber.



    However I did finish up with four pieces all same thickness in the end.



    Within the hour.



    Cut some dadoes on the router, should have done those before I shaped the carcass sides.

    It made a naughty cutting setup. But I was only using a single flute router cutter so perhaps that is acceptable?



    Made some corner posts and put biscuits cuts to all pieces, that was a bit of a puzzle as well.



    Couldnt resist putting in long sides in position (they are unglued in picture)



    Going to make some brass fitting brackets to hold the tissue lid down to box, but will screw them in position before sides are glue up to make fitting easier.

    Located a piece of heavy gauge brass from my model railway days and made some brackets to fit to carcass and later to lid. Got to get some 10mm or 3/8" screws before I proceed any further.



    Cut brass with my M42 bandsaw blade but mounted the brass to some scrap timber first, didnt fancy holding the metal through the bandsaw.





    Cleaned the brackets up, and awaiting screws.

    Located the brass screws, an old fashion ironmonger shop still exists in Torbay and after sorting through his stock located 30 x 3/8" no.3 brass screws at ten for 40p. There are not many of that breed left.

    So now got out a piece of nice clean maple and resawn into 12 mm pieces ready for thicknesser and making up lid.





    Couldn't resist adding a contrast insert into the lid. Then gluing up.

    Put on the brass holding brackets and then glued the carcass to shape.



    Shaped up the lid and at present it is layed in position.



    This box will hold the larger version of tissues supplied by supermarkets here.

    Love all your work. Just a quick question about the tissue box top. Do you expect any wood movement problems when you attach it using the brass brackets?

    Re movement, no more than if the lid had been fixed with hinges, This lid construction I have been using one way or another over the past 5 years and have not had any distortion problems so it should hopefully work ok.
    The maple was 11% moisture content when purchased.

    I'm liking the look of this one. Love the corner posts and the choice of contrasting timbers. Nice touch with the insert in the top

    Hi again Woody. Just a quick question you've probably answered before. When you use that glue up tray thingy you have, how do you get the pieces tight up against the side before you screw down a stop? How do you keep all the screw holes from making the surface unlevel?

    Just thinking about how I could adapt that design for my uses.

    PS - I hope your cold or alergies clear up so you can make something else soon.
