Matrix, No, the secret to preventing glue weeping through veneer, is to apply only enough to create a bond. Not very helpful I know, but only experience can determine how much is the right amount. The catch is actually a lock with a key. Locks on these boxes only have emotional value only and "may" keep the kids out.

That does make sense about the amount of glue. So did you use a slower setting Urea glue?

Matrix, I use pretty much all the time, selleys external aquadhere 'Tradesmans Choice', on the basis that if the box is exposed to as much water as would cause the normal aquadhere to fail, then the box is stuffed any way. I do wait about one and a half minutes for the glue to "set" a bit before applying the veneer.

Beautiful box Jim. May I ask where you get the imitation gold leaf lettering.

    Great Box Jim ,
I have tinkering with making a couple for a while now as first birthday presents for my Great Niece and Nephew for their important papers etc
With the lettering what did you glue it down with and what did you use as a coating
I was going wit a harder timber but I like your reasoning and will use red cedar with an inlay top
Thanks for showing it gave me some better ideas

Very nicce work. When I look at the inlays and read that this are shopped made too, I know that still have to learn a lot. Can you give us some more details how you produce such beautiful inlays?

I tried for my first inlay to glue 5x5m sticks together which were then sandwiched with two thin plywood plates. But the result was not pleasing.

So what is the secret to produce such nice onlays?

Jim that is beautiful work. did you veneer both sides, and what did use for your substrate? And what is your finish of choice.
    Thanks Kev.

Simple and elegant - a beautiful job. I love the grain - almost looks like a textured leather finish you'd get a on a book. I'd love to see some more of your work. Very inspiring.

    Thanks for the nice comments.
Floody, I have a web site, the url is at the bottom of this post. I do need to up date it, I no longer have darkish hair.
Cagey, yes both sides of the substrate are veneered. The substrate is 4mm exterior ply. The finishing process consisted of four coats of sanding sealer, (cedar is a very open grained timber) and eight coats of mirrowtone lacquer, diluted by 10% thinners, rubbed back with oooo steel wool and restored with EEE.
Detfall and Wardy, do a search on "making veneer bandings". I did a wip on that about six months ago.
Ashore and DIY Dan, I cheated a bit and got the local sign writer to cut the lettering from a gold film. It is self adhesive. The lacquer was then sprayed over it with no adverse effects.
Hope this answers the questions, if not fire some more.

Very Clever! We all need a box to store those deeds, birth certifcates, pictures of loved ones and the like. I really like the function of the box, and I'll add it to my to do list. Once I get those otehr non box projects out of the way.
