Default Doug Stowe boxes (work in progress)

I recently got the latest Fine Woodworking magazine (December 2008 issue) and there is a rather excellent article on how to build a box by the master himself, Doug Stowe. So I went out to my shop and whipped together a prototype. I was so pleased with how nice it looked and how easily it went together that I decided to make a production line for upcoming Christmas gifts. Fill them with candy, wrap them, and hand them out. I am using the production line approach because there are some machine setups required and it's just as easy to make a few as it is one. I've got the pieces all laid out and am trying to match lids with sides. The timbers are curly maple, zebrawood, quartersawn sycamore, mahogany, bocote, bubinga, purpleheart, and kingwood. There is no lid standing behind the mahogany sides because I haven't figured out what would look good with that yet. The last photo is of the prototype. It features curly maple sides with a bubinga top and splines. A piece of scrap ebony makes for the lift. I haven't applied any finish to it yet and am torn between an oil finish and spray lacquer.

    Thanks for the tutorial, Doug!

Cisco, you've done it again, lovely looking prototype, and wonderful array of wood for the other boxes. Amos

I like that design, Cisco. A good selection of timbers to use, too. Looking good.

Nice work, I am sure Doug would be proud of your effort. He is a great box maker and you have certainly created a box that is in the traditional DS style.. Just one suggestion if I may. A slight chamfer on the lid would take away that square look and may look quite nice too. Just a thought but its an excellent box. Looks terrific.

Thanks, John. I agree completely. Some of the boxes will have that sharp edge relieved with a couple of swipes of sandpaper on a sanding block, while others will receive a 45 degree chamfer. I'm even contemplating a couple of them receiving a small roundover on the router table - say 3/16" radius or so. Also toying with the idea of rounding over some of the splined corner edges as well just to see. As you can probably tell - I'm in the playing mode right now. It's like driving down a road in the country you've never been on - you don't know where you are going, or why, but you are enjoying the drive.
