    Default Dowel Joint

G'day all, hope some of you may be able to help me, I am more into metal work, but there comes a time when one has to make a box to put that freshly finished metal tool in, I would like to get my hands on some dowels, as I was given an ozzie multi jig for my birthday, for that particular reason, my questions? in Brisbane, can you buy dowels of different wood types, so they will show the joints?,(see pic) I tried Bunnings but they only have pine or Tassie oak, the other option I was thinking is to make my own with plug cutting bits, but the ones I have seen seem to short for that purpose, can you get longer ones from some where, to cut 6mm, 8mm dia plugs?, any information will be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Richard.

    G'day Richard,
    I'm sorry I don't have a link or a photo........but there are devices called a "dowel maker"
Basically, they turn stock through a hole in a bit of metal. The turning action is achieved by mounting the stock in a drill. There are others that use cutters or knives.
This may give you better search options.

You can make your own dowells by forcing a piece of square(ish) wood with a taper on the end through progressively smaller holes in a piece of sheet steel. Leave the burr on the holes when you drill them.

    Richard,

I know that it is not a great help, if I show you an address from a tool provider in Germany where you can get to get a solution. But at least ist shows after what to look for. Here is the link http://www.feinewerkzeuge.de/gewind.htm
A fellow woodworker from Luxemburg (a small state at the German border. Little bigger than Sidney bay area ) did it this way http://www.woodworking.de/werkstattbilder/050.html

Another way is to use your router http://www.festool.de/download/awb314.pdf or even your drilling machine http://www.wood-line.de/W/W01020100.htm

Sorry that all links are in German, but from the pictures you can see the solutions used even if you don't understand each word. If you need assistance in translation I can help you.

I have a piece of steel 200x 50x10mm with a lot of holes drilled. I open the vyce and place the steel over it start with a big hole work your way down to the size you require.

Thanks all, yes I had seen some of those cutters, I will try and make one, or a plug cutter, then I'll need to make another box to house them in! it's a vicious circle, isn't it .
    Have fun!,
    Kind regards, Richard.
