Another Drifting Sand Box
In my last post on "bentwood box" I mentioned another drifting sand box that I was making for a gift, managed to progress to an almost complete stage today until rain prevented me from final lacquer. The timber is NG rosewood with a jacaranda insert....no tray in this one and the base will be lined with red felt.Power sanding was only used to create the shape going from 120, 180, 240 & 320 then hand sanded with 400, sanding sealer applied and next sand will be 800 wet and dry before spraying. The process is per the pics....comments welcome...KC

Ah Ha! so that is how a carved box is done. How does the NG Rosewood handle grinding? Has it ever split unexpectedly on you?
Cheers

Finished box
Managed to complete the box even though an unexpected shower of rain came through as I was finishing spraying causing a "plume", a little bit more work to correct.
Wendy to answer your question on NG Rosewood, all the rosewood that I have been using is re-sawn reject furniture grade that varies greatly in grain and colour, generally it responds well to an Arbortec burr it tends to fray with a cutter, thats why I chose to use a sanding disc only on this box as it had a bit of cranky grain particularly in the lid.
The finish is 70% gloss Stylwood lacquer...still have to buff with Canubra wax to give it a velvety feel. Kerry

That is absolutely amazing! I will now need to do one in Red Gum ... once I finish my current box project....

Lovely looking box Kerry, I really like the contrast of the insert and those waves have a great shape to them.
