Dusty choices
Hi guys,
At the moment I have very limited (face mask) dust protection strategies in my workshop. I've been looking at options and I'd be grateful for your thoughts.
Firstly the full on dust extraction systems such as from Carba-Tec. Seems that these will remove most of the gross dusty bits. Downside is the size and the expense once you get hoses to all the machines across the workshop. Also I've read that they don't remove some of the finer particulate matters.
Second is one of the portable, helmet types which seem cheaper and look quite effective.
This is all new territory for me and I want to protect my lungs etc but don't really know which way to start.
Thanks for your help.

Face mask is not enough
My understanding is that it is the dust in the air that remains a problem. You need to remove that or as soon as you take off your mask you will breath it in.
Furthermore, the dust settles on everything, so every time you move something you stir up breathable dust particles.

The simplest solution if your neighbors are not too close is to put dust extractors outside the shed. If the neighbors are a problem then a noise reduction chamber can assist.
Few folk appreciate that even if no power tools as used raw unfinished wood and wood shavings also generate a lot of fine dust by slow decomposition and that the air inside a shed will always be dusty if it is not adequately filtered using a high volume HEPA filter (no, a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner will not do) or ventilated using high volume air flows.

thanks for the thoughts, guys. Cost will come into it of course and I think I need to research the products (standalone vs personal) a bit more

Question on bags
I have the Carbatech cheapie 1 hp dusty and I have been using plastic bottom bags since purchase.
Question: What is better plastic bottom bags or another 5micron bag like the top one?
They show at $24.00 in the book.
I see that this model is shown with plastic bottom bags in the Cattledog, and the 2hp one has cloth top and bottom.
Mate, Ray says that there will be less dust and less top bag catchment if I use cloth top and bottom.....
