Bob, the simplest are made with the table saw. Get a longish board and cut a plow for the bottom, then the top. I cut the plow for the top about 1/2 mm bigger.
Cut the board into two ends and sides. Using the TS again, cut two dados either end for a lock rebate join. Cut a plow in the front to hold the lid. Finally, cut the top and bottom to fit.
Join the lid to the front then cut it free with a backsaw. Assemble after finishing the interior.
If that doesn't help, one of these links may (note some are probably broken, I haven't checked them for a while).

I find mitred boxes to be an easy and satisfying technique for making small boxes. This thread shows the process:
https://www.woodworkforums.com/f87/veneer-lidded-boxes-33333
I basically follow a method in Box-Making Basics -- Design, Techniques, Projects, by David M. Freedman, (Taunton Press, 1997). This is an excellent book, with lots of ideas very clearly explained. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Many thanks for the terrific posts.
Wonder if you can help with a gluing query ... for mitred corners can you get away with one of those threaded rod/right angle clamp setups, or is it important to knock up a jig to get pressure perpendicular to each mitre face? Initially I'm thinking of a mitre alone with a splined mitre further down the track.

Note sure I understand the question, but here are some options for clamping small mitred boxes. Band-clamps also work well, but these particular boxes were too small.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Wow. Allsorts!
Thanks ZW.
The bottom right version is what I was wondering about .. no spline or tongue in the mitre in that case?Cheers, Ern

With splines you'd have to insert them prior to glueing. With keys (which I used here), you cut the slots for the keys after glueing up the box (see posts near the one linked to above).
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

It's all in the Gifkins video, including panel construction
If you don't have a Gifkins, just use box joints instead.
Box Making VideoIf at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Thanks ZW. Yep. Figured that. My question tho is whether that bottom right style of clamp would work OK if the joints were just mitres butted against each other.
Gumby, not sure if I've seen that one. Is it about dovetailed joints only?Cheers, Ern

IMHO, if the mitres are a good clean fit, you don't need any extra joinery. The mitres in the J/box I made were just glued, but did have a rebated ply base which was inserted during glue-up to aid with squareness and strength.
