    Default first hand dovetailed box

Hi guys, Im a First year cabinet maker apprentice and this is my first go at a keepsake box i made for my godmothers birthday. i used recycled cedar for majority of the box and blackwood veneer for the top, i really enjoyed making this box spent around 1-2 hours after work a night and in total around 2 weeks to complete. any advice would be fantastic as im always up for a bit of helpful criticism! Thanks

Thanks very much ruddy, my boss showed me techniques using the stanley 71 hand router and using chisels to get a clean finish!

Well done, that box looks terrific. I bet it was well received by your godmother.

What sort of finish did you use, and how did you fit the red lining - that looks swish!!
    regards,

    Dengy

Thanks very much! I used a 60% polythurane finish to get the high gloss look. With the red lining I cut a piece of 3mm mdf slightly smaller than the base of the box, and glued the foam and felt to that and pushed it into place. It was tight enough to not need glue.

    Nice looking box, James.
My only suggestions would be to look at the proportions and spacing of the dovetails. Try to separate the lid from the base through the middle of a pin. Also, IMHO (purely subjective) thin pins compared with tails look better.

You should be pleased with your achievement with this box (as stated by AlexS the only suggestion to set out your dovetail spacing's and proportion's but that is just a personal thing) the quality of the work is great congratulation's.
    Regards Rod.

Thanks very much for the feedback!! next dovetail box i make i will post up here and hopefully make the dovetails spacing better and now im aware of where the lid is seperated and makle sure its through a pin. Yes i agree the cedar and blackwood do go well together.
