    Default My latest effort...

I am so relieved that this came together without any of the problems I could foresee. PHEW!

    Poplar, natural and walnut-stained, with a tung oil finish, 16cm(w) x 30cm(l) x 23(h)cm, Frame/panel thickness @7mm.

With only 19mm thick stock to hand, it was certainly a laborious task to rip it to size with a Ryoba. Apart from that, the only tools used were a small dozuki, 3mm and 6mm chisels and a card scraper. The floating panels (the stained bits ) were deliberately left slightly rough to get that 'knocked about' feel... and I see from the pix that I didn't wipe it down after the last light sanding. Oops!

Should really have a few more coats of tung oil, but as 'er indoors likes it as is, well... I'm happy to park it up.

    Onto the next!

Nice work. Looks quite solid. From the pic the hinges look a little lite on for the weight of the lid.

    Very small box, interesting.
Was this a test piece for something else?

It was more of a concept piece. A: to see if what was in my head was practical, B: to see if my meagre handtool skills were up to the task and C: to keep me from going postal while bunkered up in a basement during subzero temps with bugger all in the way of a shed. (Whenever I need a screwdriver, for example, I need to head to the cutlery drawer! )

    A & C worked, B is just barely acceptable.

Aye, I'm not happy with them.

The original concept was to make a "Hollywood Pirate's" treasure chest, replacing the metal bands/strapping with wood. In my head I envisioned the old, external wrought iron hinges and latch.

Sadly, I couldn't source any suitably scaled fittings here - Lee Valley has discontinued supply - and, even more frustrating, I have exactly what I want sitting in my shed... but I won't be back in Oz 'til the new fiscal year.

I thought these mini hinges would do to make the box usable for now and as they only require tiny rebates I could later retrofit the others with minimal... "repairs." Maybe. Probably not.

Amazing what one can do with little or no tools or machines.

Nice one, Skew. How did you bend/curve the lid end frames?

You've got better methods of keeping warm in the permafrost other than ripping stuff down with the Ryoba surely?

You'll surpass the need for a shed soon enough given you've become Mr McGyver.
I make things, I just take a long time.

I didn't... I simply cut a few straight lengths to approximate dimensions and glued them into a horseshoe shape. Marked out the arcs, cut down to the scribed line with the dozuki every 5mm or so and broke away the excess - much the same way as one would knock out rabbets in top/bottom plates for wall studs - before painfully chiselling/scraping it all flat.

The joint lines are visible in the pix.

One can only do so many pushups in a day...

Nar. 6 weeks of handtools versus about one day with power? I'm not that masochistic!

Although I must admit my hand tool skills have improved quite a bit recently: no fingers were harmed in the making of this box...
