experimental box with dowel joints

Hi gang. I've seen this box or similar, on various sites. I know the plans are in a book somewhere that you can purchase, which I don't have. But I wanted to have a go at making it. So I resorted to the old dowel joints which is all I used to use when I first got into woodwork 50 years ago.

I experimented with this one as the timber cost me nothing. I have a ton of ARC and a lot of coachwood that a mate at bowls gave me some years ago. I'm not a fan of coachwood, I think its a bit boring. So when I make another of these I need something different to replace the coachwood, more of a lighter colour to spruce the box up a bit.

I just wanted to play with the dimensions, tapered legs etc.

A bit of a variation to my usual dovetail or finger joints.

Looks good from here. The shaping at the bottom of the sides work well. What material do you use for the hinge pins?

Thanks Bob. All the sides are 13mm thick, that worked perfectly with my dowel jig. For the hinge pins I used 6mm O.D. copper tubing, cut into short lengths and inserted into the sides and lid and glued,,.....with 5mm O.D. brass rods inside to pivot. Hence the pivot doesn't touch the timber at all. I used a 1mm brass spacer on each side also.
