    Default Fake suede???

Getting a bit bored with velvet for lining boxes and when I searched for some suede online this fake stuff at Spotlight seemed interesting (and cheap) so I got the missus to pick some up in Rocky. Not quite what I was expecting though and I don't know how to deal with the white felt backing - I wasn't expecting a backing at all, let alone something so thick. I'm thinking that if I try folding it over a piece of card like I do with the velvet it is going to be awful bulky around the sides and leave a sunken area in the middle. Anyone used it before?, and if so, how did you attach it??

    Test

The paper looks as thick as the velvet.

    Keen to hear.

Yes i have used it and no there is no problem folding over a card as we do. there is no void left and you attach in the same way, spray adhesive, then use double sided tape.

I have found Spotlight has several different types of faux suede, yours being one of them and one that really does act and play like suede. you have to pick your store as not all stores stock the same stuff mores the pity. I have some and can send you a snippet to take round if you would like. pm me your details and i'll pop it in the post. its a pale Tan colour/Beige almost.

An interesting point about Spotlight. All their stores are graded either A, B, C, D, E. The type of fabric/s sent to each store is dependant on your store grading. Somehow their head office knows which fabrics sell better at which stores. That's why you see certain fabrics at one store but not at another. Fascinating,...!!.

A woman at Spotlight told me all this once. I buy all my fabrics there, and they give me those big cardboard rolls that they come rolled in, in the shop. I cut them into 500mm lengths on my drop saw, and get the women to cut my fabric into 1/2 metre widths , then roll them up and store in a spare wardrobe shelf. Prevents getting them all creased by folding instead of rolling.

The velvet I buy is in the upholstery section, has like a white mesh backing, cuts easy, doesnt stretch, folds over your cardboard easy. Beautiful and soft to feel. I pad it with wadding for my bases.

I've got like a mini spotlight store,....definitely more than I will ever need, but its there. Different colours of velvet to match whatever timber.

This is the type I bought . . . Bari Faux Suede Fabric Caramel . . . but it was only $15/m at the time. I'll have to do a dummy run with it to see how it goes - that backing felt just seems too thick to me

I like that idea a lot! - but now it's all home I'd have to cut it into strips myself . . . . so it will probably stay folded

Still haven't got to it - planning on trying it in the drawers and ring tray on the jewellery box I'm making at the moment but there's been a few hold-ups on that - eg: Veneering the doors!

Somehow missed your offer first time around Thanks, but I've got so much of this stuff with the backing on it now I had better work out how to use some of it before I go buying another type

Been a while but I got around to trying the faux-suede at last. Not quite what I was hoping for and unless I find a chunk of furniture that needs reupholstering it might end up in the bin. As pictured, the backing is so thick that I couldn't get the corners to fold over close enough and ended up with gaps I can't live with. Looks good and has a nice cushioned feel but those corners - nah! I also tried it on a ring-holder sausage but the ends won't fold over without leaving big dog-ears . . . . back to the drawing board I suppose.

So where do I get some suede (cheap!) that I can actually use????

That Harmatan are an English company, there is plenty of good leather available in Australia. I buy from this company Performance Kangaroo Leather | Packer Leather

They have a good range all done in house. Their pig skin suedes are lovely and easy to work with and i have often found that if the leather is a solid colour through then you can use the reverse suede side

Yes, Harmatan are English. I thought to mention it as their colour choices are on the site!

She that Packer Leather has such basic info. I find that disappointing. These companies must have some amazing products, but short of direct enquiry there is no way to find out. Since I'm such a tiny buyer I completely waste their time!

I may haven mentioned Leather Co and Sydney Leather in the past. I've bought from them both many times and find them a pleasure to deal with.

Another is Ebene Nabuka.... wow owo wow.... what a shame it isnt readily available in Oz. For overseas orders they are hugely reluctant to ship. They seem to be very arty, snobby and disinclined to deal with the peasants. I have a swatch from them and it is INCREDIBLE.

Other options are "bonded leather" and PU "leather".... both readily available on AliExpress, but only in small sizes. Simply contact the vendor for the size you need and pay them directly.

You could try Birdsall leather: Home Page - Birdsall Leathercraft

Pigskin split suede in various colours $22 for 10 sq. ft

I've used them myself yet (still going through leather I got years ago) but many boxmakers from the ACT Guild use them.

NSW Leather have a huge range, and will send small samples if you ring and ask them. I've bought from them for years, and found them excellent to deal with.
