Default putting short pieces of timber through a planer/thicknesser

Sometimes in box making I have needed to replace a piece of timber but it is rather short to pass through the thicknesser, (my manual states 10" lengths ) so I have seen this tip mentioned on a video.
Attach battens to each side of short piece so that there is enough length to work through the machine.

I could see problems, because if you were able to screw it down flat (if that was possible, it would take long screws) would you win anyway because timber with nasty bow oftens defies any planing to correct.

I would most probably try using a bandsaw to produce two flat surfaces.

    G'day John,
The batten idea works, as does a piece of scrap fore and aft. Some books advise securing the batten with brads, which I've never tried. I use PVA glue, as I've tried hot melt glue which has given away on me......Ouch.
