    Default Finish for a box

Hi all, I've just been away for the last month and happened to call in to a Woodwork shop along the way. The shop had some very nice boxes there, obviously all made from the same person. The finish was like a plastic/glass type finish and definitely not an oil or a wax finish. Not totally sure I really like it, but it did look good. Any ideas what this finish might have been,..??. Regards Paul

    Hi Paul,

Most likely its a gloss polyurethane type finish, though it could be shellac. If you want to dull it down a bit, so its a satin type finish, you could get some Minwax Wipe On Poly "Satin" and coat it with that. It will work well over the gloss. If you want a nice wax finish, you can use UBeaut Traditional Wax as the final coat.

    Regards,

    Rob

Thanks Rob, I've used WOP finish and these boxes I seen, if they would have used that, would have had a heap of coats on them. The finish was very thick and very plasticy. I could not have done that many coats on a box, would have taken ages. So I am not really sure,..hmm...!, Regards, Paul

It may be a pour on 2 part poly. There's a type that's often used on wooden clocks, can't think of the name though. It could be wipe on poly that has been polished using car polish after it's cured. You can get a really glossy finish this way.

    Hi Alex,

very interesting comment there, I am curious. So is there any tricks to this. So after at coat or two of WOP and maybe a light sand, you use car polish for a very glossy finish,..?

    Any expanding on this,

    Regards, Paul

    Could be nitrocellulose lacquer.

Ive been fooling with it for a few weeks now. It's sort of like polyurethane without all the hideousness of a plastic look and needing rubbing out.

I've only polished the WOP once, on a gunstock. Gave it 7-8 coats first, as per the maker's instructions. Then left it for a couple of days and polished it with auto polish and a soft cloth. Came up nicely without looking like it was wrapped in glad-wrap.
