Default Finish for Figured Red Gum

    Hi All

Would be very appreciative of finish recommendations of what others have used on boxes made out of figured red gum

    Many thanks

I typically use a home-brew version of Danish Oil on my boxes - about 7 or 8 coats (apply thick, wait 10 minutes, then buff off as much as possible), followed by Renaissance Wax.

Here's an example of a box made from fiddleback Redgum, Jarrah and Maple.

3-4 coats of Mirotone Spraylac. Doesn't fill the pores like many other polys so you still see the full grain

    Hi mpot,

Many thanks for your reply and what an absolutely beautiful box - looks so good I think you could be selling your home brew

Thanks double.d for the lead and reply, I love how this finish allows the light and dark to come through and has a nice satin look

By the way great box ! Really appreciate you posting and mpot positing pictures -

Sand to 180/240 to start and a light scuff with 240 between coats.

The key is to use lots of light coats; resist the temptation to go heavier on the first coat because it will look like there's nothing there. It dries very quickly so it won't take long.

    Thanks.

I'm happy to share the recipe - it's equal parts of
    • boiled linseed oil
    • white spirits
    • gloss varnish

Yes it's the Chinese wood oil. I tend not to use the C word as it attracts unwanted prejudices.
