Default Best flat bottom cutting saw blade

Best flat bottom cutting saw blade

I want to make some small boxes and cut splines in the corners of the boxes. I am looking for a full kerf blade that leaves a true flat bottom. For all you box’s makers out there what is the best blade to achieve this? Preferably one at a reasonable price but cut quality is most important do to the fact all the time it takes to build a quality box and when you look at the box you see the splines very heavily and if they don’t have a good fit (seeded flatly) the whole box looks terrible. Any suggestions?

Most people just get an old or cheap blade ground square.

Both CMT and Forrest make blades that will do this. Look for an ATBR tooth grind. Four out of the five teeth in a cluster will be alternating bevel, the fifth will have a flat raker profile. This will allow you to crosscut and rip and still get your flat bottom. I use one from CMT (#215.050.10) and am perfectly happy with it. I cut a lot of really hard exotic hardwoods and this blade has held up well.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

I got hold of a Freud LM72R. It does the job well at a reasonable price.

I was at a woodworking show and went by the Forrest Booth. They told me that the Woodworker IIs can come with flat raker teeth included with the ATB teeth. The representative did tell me that they needed to be ordered direct from Forrest. I do not know if the ordering part is still true. Too bad that I had already purchased my Woodworker II.

I bought an ATB rip blade from Peacock Saws in brisbane, and they reground it to flat-bottom for another $10.

There's also the intriguing looking "flat bottom crosscut" blades from infinity tools. https://www.infinitytools.com/prodin...number=080-250 Northwood tools in Qld have them. Unfortunately they only list them in 5/8 arbor and my saw is 1"
