Thread: Fountain pen collection box

Looking forward to the journey after seeing previous builds. Does this mean you are a pen maker too?

Hi Dallas, no I don't turn pens. I should probably give it a go one day.

I do collect old parker fountain pens hence the need for the drawer box. The one I have is full to the brim.

Pen inserts arrived. Need to finalise the dimensions and start to chop some timber. Sounds like a plan for the weekend [emoji12]

You should be able to fit 2 or 3 pens in that Jacques,...!!!

It's days like this that I'm seriously considering packing up the woodworking tools.

I don't know if it's the hard maple or a bad bandsaw blade but this ruined my expensive maple, not happy [emoji53].

Anyway, they say a bad workman blames his tools.

Upwards and onwards......

Hey Jacques, Dont give up. Work out why this happened and try and correct the problem. Even if it means getting some more timber and starting again.

After sleeping on it I'm determined to get a decent re-saw in that maple using my old Taiwanese bandsaw. I ordered a new 2950 x 19 x 3TPI blade from Robertson and Sinclair in Auckland. It should be ready for collection Saturday morning. The plan for the weekend (once the gardening chores are out of the way) is to refit the new blade and go through the entire setup process from scratch, checking alignment, guide blocks, bearings etc... I will post some photos of nicely cut maple once done .

Good luck. I think with a new, good blade you stand a good chance of getting a good result from a resaw. When I've had that problem on my old Taiwanese bandsaw, it was caused by a combination of hard wood, deep cut and a blade that was either blunt or damaged, causing it to try to twist.
Do you need to resaw it, or could you puut it through a thicknesser?

Hi Alex, agreed, I'm confident the new blade will do the trick. It's ~45mm thick American maple, about 200mm wide. I can put it through my thicknesser but that will just be a waste hence my preference to get at least three 10-12mm pieces from the board.

Go for it. It's a nice piece of wood, would be a shame to waste it.

Hehe. Super happy as it seems like the new blade and the tuning worked. Nice straight cuts without any issue. Slow progress but progress at least [emoji16]
