We are not trying to set up a transport industry. We are discussing how to transport random size pieces of wood from Perth to the East coast. The empty crate in this case is disposable. Just another item to consider when assessing the total cost of each trip. If indeed it is $300 for a tonne and the crate weighs 30kg and costs $100, the end result is $400 for 970 kg net against $600 for 500 kg net.

If you two clowns don't stop I will burn it all At the end of the day neither of you needs to find a crate, someone over here does as no-one is going to pay to send an empty crate from East to Perth just so Dave can fill it up for you.

Dave is located in an industrial area and there is usually no shortage of old crates from engines and the like in the area if you are willing to ask around or keep a lookout.

The question you need to be asking is who in Perth is willing to locate a crate for you and send you the dimensions so you can get a price for shipping it to you full of my firewood.

Exactly, "you" being the people who want the wood. I just presented an option and explained it when challenged, not clearly enough for the targeted audience, it seems. Why supposed non-clowns, including you, have not said that yesterday?

Because it is not in my best interest and no-one had asked.

I just got sick of reading the carry on, it was turning me off so figure sooner or later it might turn Dave off which is not really a good idea seeing he has generously offered this service to anyone who is prepared to put in the leg work. I don't see why people need to come across like they are "at" each other by making remarks that appear snide. Whether they were meant that way or not, that is how they read to me from this end.

It would have been more beneficial if someone had asked a few questions about what is available at this end. I will keep my eye out for a suitable crate and pickup anything I come across, no promises though. Once a crate of suitable size is located then someone can do the calcs on weight if filled with jarrah for some transport costs. Unless someone actually works for a trucking company that backloads from Perth and can arrange a mates deal it is likely that it will be cheaper to get prices from this end. If it works out to expensive then we can just empty the crate into my ute.

That would make to much sense From what I have seen most offcuts are to small to make a decent crate out of. I would be willing to drop down one afternoon with the framing gun and just join all the bits together as a big lump to send over to them though

It looks like you have got it all under control Burnsy, so I will withdraw from any participation and await the outcome.

Down at my local green grocer I've seen large cardboard "crates" packed with oranges or somesuch. They are a pallet square and about 500 or 600 mm high.
If these are used to ship fruit to Perth then they would be perfect to fill with random hunks of jarrah and bring east

    BTW
Dave sent me a satchel of Jarrah and it is simply lovely timber
as soon as I get some shed time I'll turn it into something other then nice short lengths of timber

I have spoken to Dave today and we have agreed that shipping via AP is the way to go, it is easy for him and easy for the receiver, now for the nitty gritty. I live near Wollongong and am prepared to receive the first shipment but it is dependant on a couple of things, they being the necessary interest from other people to spread the cost and the willingness of those same people to pick up the stuff from my house. I literally have not got the time to chase anyone up for money or to muck around despatching timber all over the place. This would suit those living either on the southern end of Sydney or in Wollongong/near South Coast. As long as you are willing to travel it really does not matter I suppose, I am just putting out ideas. What would be better is for someone with more time than myself to pick up the task in the Sydney region for future receipts though I will continue to do it if it does not take up a lot of time just to help out. Anyone can use this service if they contact Dave and organise it.

So what is needed at the moment is four people besides myself. Pat has indicated his interest so if three others would like to put their hands up we can kick it off. it will be money up front and I will supply the beer when we divvy it up at my place. Any takers??

    Chris

I'll come in as the fifth if needed
I can only get down there on a sat arvo or Sunday for the divvy up. Hope that's not a problem. Depends a bit on my son's sport.
The way I'm looking at it is $120 far 100kg bargain compared to $9.50 for 3kg
    anyway keep me posted

    cheers

    Nick
